How To Fix SEO Keyword Cannibalization For Your Website


In this video i’ll be walking through keyword cannibalization and how it’s hurting your organic health of your website. Multiple pages ranking for the same keywords can hurt your search engine optimization efforts. It hurts in a number of different ways when google gets confused as far as which keyword should rank or which page should rank for that keyword. One of the biggest factors for seo on google is link building right and getting quality backlinks from referring domains that are relevant so if you have multiple pages that cover kind of the same topics you’re diluting that page authority that is being passed.

Internal linking is important to pass that link equity amongst other pages to help improve their own keyword rankings. Google also uses internal links and anchor text as signals to identify you know what your page is all about. High bounce rates and load time spent on your website are poor signals to google showing them that hey this page might not be relevant and you will rank worse accordingly. An example i wanted to show is from this express writer’s website article showing off.
There are a couple of different ways that you can check to see if your website is being cannibalized.

The first is basically just to do a manual check of all of your content on your website and just figure out like topic buckets. The other way that keyword cannibalization commonly occurs is through duplicate content or very similar content or both mortgage and refinance rates at several pages not to say that these are cannibalizing one another. The second way is to look at like your primary keywords and see if other urls are ranking for that keyword and if they are then that’s an example of keyword capitalization.

Once you’ve identified your keywords that are cannibalizing there are a couple different methods to fix it. The first is just consolidating all that content that you identified as cannibalizing into a single page. The other method is to just delete content. You should be 301 redirecting it so that way you’re transferring users to that page and you’re also able to pass that link equity that those pages had garnered from internal linking or external websites to the new page.

You can add canonical tags so canonical tag basically tells google there are multiple pages that kind of have duplicate or similar information. You can use the canonical attack to point to a single preferred page and just tell google hey this is the one that i want you to pay attention to and pass authority to ignore these other duplicate pages. You also want to again update your internal links and the anchor text to avoid keyword cannibalization.

Example of Keyword Cannibalization:

If I write the following 3 articles:
– SEO Trends in 2018
– SEO Trends in 2019
– SEO Trends in 2020

It will actually hurt my rankings for the keyword ‘SEO Trends’ because I have 3 pages on my website focused on SEO Trends.

How To Avoid Keyword Cannibalization:

1. Create 1 Page: Write 1 article about a topic and keep it updated on a yearly basis. Never change the URL.

2. 301 Redirects: If you have multiple articles targeting the same keyword, merge them into 1 article, set-up 301 redirects, and delete the old pages.

3. Canonical URLs: Use the rel=”canonical” tag for the page you prefer to be ranked in search engines.

How To Find Keyword Cannibalization:

– Content Metadata Audit: Export your posts & pages to review title tags, meta descriptions & focus keywords.

– Create a Keyword Map: By mapping keywords to content, you can find pages that focus on the same keyword.

– Google Search Console: You can review individual search queries and search queries for specific pages.

– Google Site Search: Do a search in Google like this:
site:yourwebsite.com keyword to see ranking pages.
